Ferrari Group & Air France-KLM-Martinair Cargo SAF Program

A further step towards a sustainable fuel industry and the reduction of the environmental impact of air transport.

Air France KLM Martinair Cargo and Ferrari Group are proud to announce an agreement in support of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Cargo program, which allows shippers and freight forwarders to reduce their CO2 emissions by encouraging them to play an active role in the future of aviation sustainability.

On 18 May 2022, at the Ferrari Group offices in Malpensa, Jean-Yves Cap, Director of Italy and Switzerland for Air France KLM Martinair Cargo, delivered the certificate of participation in the SAF program to Marco Deiana, CEO of Ferrari Group.

“The Cargo SAF program allows freight forwarders and shippers to fuel Air France and KLM flights with a percentage of sustainable fuel. Clients decide how much to invest and we ensure that the entire invested capital is used to procure SAF. When investing in SAF, our clients receive a certified report from independent auditors indicating the CO2 reduction achieved. By participating in the Cargo SAF program, our customers not only reduce the impact of carbon dioxide emissions but confirm their commitment to lead our industry towards a more sustainable future. Only with the support of companies such as Ferrari Group can we successfully develop a more favorable market for SAF ”, said Jean-Yves Cap, Director Italy and Switzerland for Air France KLM Martinair Cargo.

Marco Deiana, CEO of Ferrari Group, explained the reasons for participating in the Program:
“One of the main development objectives of the Ferrari Group is growth through sustainability, having among our priorities the reduction of the environmental impact of the services offered globally. It seemed natural to us to collaborate with our long-time partner Air France-KLM in their innovative Cargo SAF Program – we are proud to be among the first investors. The contribution is part of the various non-profit projects launched and developed to enhance our efforts towards sustainability: we are committed, globally through all our offices around the world, to reduce the impact of fossil fuels on the environment, always staying up to date on the new technologies and innovations related to Valuable freight transport and their integrated logistics management.
Participating in the Cargo SAF Program in collaboration with Air France and KLM means for the Ferrari Group to support and contribute to a more circular economy, helping future generations to inherit a world in which they can thrive.”

Air France and KLM invest all contributions in the supply and use of sustainable aviation fuel. This will support the creation of a sustainable fuel industry capable of making aviation increasingly eco-responsible. By investing in this program, cargo partners are taking concrete action to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to the green transition of aviation.

Sustainable fuels for aviation, fundamental levers for reducing CO₂ emissions – Air France and KLM have been engaged for many years in research and development programs in the field of alternative fuels. In 2011, the two airlines were among the first to operate commercial flights with sustainable fuels, demonstrating that it is possible to use an alternative energy to fossil fuels.
Today, sustainable aviation fuels can be made from waste oils, waste products and forest residues. They can be incorporated into aircraft fuel without any modifications to the engine. Its use can reduce emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fuel. The main challenge today is the development of a sustainable industry to which Air France and KLM customers can make a concrete contribution.
To contribute to the decarbonisation of the sector and in line with its fleet renewal strategy, Air France KLM Martinair Cargo announced last April the purchase of 4 new full cargo Airbus A350Fs. These aircraft offer the most advanced technology and the highest standards of efficiency and, compared to previous generation aircraft, offer 11% more capacity and allow a 15% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.  At a time when climate awareness is at the heart of the strategy of many companies, the SAF program offers Air France and KLM cargo customers the opportunity to take an active part in reducing CO2 emissions.
